Ladies and Gentelmen in Pawnland, it is with a heavy heart that I share this story hot off the news wire today. Another brother in arms in our beloved industry has fallen victim to another tragic waste of life. Being a survivor of violence myself, my heart ways heavy to the friends and family of the victim. On June 23rd, my father would have celebrated his 75th year of life on Earth, but he was tragically murdered back in August of 1999.
A closing topic in most of my presentations to my large growing client base around the world centers on security and remaining vigilant in our pawn operations. Few details in murder
Officials believe killing related to Waynesboro business burglary

LAUREL — Two area law enforcement agencies are working in conjunction to try and solve an apparent Jones County murder that is connected to a Wayne County business burglary.
Maj. Robbie Suber of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department said 65-year-old Henry Charles Adcock was found dead in his home at 1286 Highway 590 near Ellisville about 7:15 a.m. Thursday. Wayne County officials reported that City Pawn Shop at 439 Azalea Mart in Waynesboro, which Adcock owns and manages, was burglarized sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Several items were reported taken from the pawn shop.
“This case is still under investigation,” Suber said during a Thursday evening press conference. “Investigators met the victim’s daughter at the scene this morning and she identified the victim.”
According to Suber, the man’s daughter received a phone call from the Waynesboro area asking her to check on her father. She did so and found her father dead, the apparent victim of foul play.
Wayne County officials said Adcock’s body was discovered in his home Thursday morning after he didn’t show up for work.
“The daughter arrived at the residence shortly before the deputies got there,” said Suber. “It’s being investigated as a murder. The cause of death has not yet been determined.”
Joining the sheriff’s department in the investigation are the Waynesboro Police Department, Investigator Wayne Black of the Jones County District Attorney’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Mississippi Crime Lab of Jackson.
Officials are releasing few details surrounding the death.
“An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death,” explained Suber. “Additional information will be released once the autopsy is complete.”
Suber said investigators also hope to pinpoint the time of Adcock’s death. He said Adcock was reportedly last seen sometime Wednesday afternoon.
Residents in the area where the killing took place are shook up about the incident.
“This comes as quite a surprise to me,” said Billy Cowart, who lives nearby at 1253 Highway 590. “You never thought something like this would happen here.”
Cowart said his son, who works in the Sandersville area, called him Thursday morning to tell him about the death of his neighbor. His son also told him that another individual was found dead in the Wayne County pawn shop.
Despite rumors of a death in Wayne County, Wayne County Coroner David Pugh said Thursday that he had no reported deaths in Wayne County Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
Officials with the Waynesboro Police Department said the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson also responded to the Wayne County burglary Thursday.
Local officials said the state Crime Lab was in charge of gathering the evidence at the Waynesboro business.
“It’s sad something like this could happen,” said Cowart, a longtime resident of the area. “Charlie was a real nice guy. I use to cut his grass and bush hog for him.”
Highway 590 resident Cathy Brady, who didn’t want her address printed, said she is shocked that someone would be murdered down the street where she, her husband and two young children reside.
“I’m very concerned about the safety of my children right now,” she said. “I also keep my nephews during the day and this is scary. My biggest concern before all of this was people not stopping for the school bus.”
Brady has another concern now, too. She said her dogs were barking for quite a while between 12:30 and 1 a.m. Thursday.
“That makes me wonder if that was why the dogs were cutting up so bad,” she said. “Maybe they were trying to let us know something was happening.”
